Flash On Tap is Back!

Before it was rescheduled, I was really looking forward to this conference. Sadly, I have a scheduling conflict, and can't make it to the first Flash On Tap.

It's a new conference, and they have some great ideas. If I could make it, I'd be in the front row of Keith Peters' workshop on "iPhone using Objective-C". I'm sure he'll bring a unique combination of inspirational and practical. Even if you can't make it to the whole conference, you might be able to register for just his workshop. That is if it isn't sold out yet! So hurry!

The Flash on Tap Conference blurs the line between business and pleasure. Experience the excitement of a beer festival while soaking in presentations by top-tier design and technology professionals. It's a three-day event by Flash professionals for Flash professionals.

My Top Picks for January

Here are my top picks for the January 25-line contest:

32
23
08
30

To be honest, I was a little worried that this month's entries would be too reminiscent of the last. But there were plenty of fresh and fabulous ideas!

I especially liked 32, because it didn't just play a tune and look great, but you could use it to write a tune! Fantastic user interaction there! So simple, and elegant.

Go and check out all the entries, play with them, and pick your own favorite!

Feature Request for Flash

Hey, Adobe! In Flash, when selecting instances that are on different layers in the time line and converting to a symbol, it should preserve the layers. As it is, the layers get flattened into one, in the newly created symbol. We shouldn't have to copy frames and then paste them into a new symbol.

25-lines contest voting and forums!

Keith's got the finalists up, and voting is open for this month's 25-line contest. This time there are great thumbnails for each finalist, to make it easier to keep track of them all. That must have taken Keith some time. In fact, Keith seems to be putting a fair amount of time into the contest. He's even set up a forum! Show your appreciation, and go participate!

Trying out "Followers" blog widget

I thought I'd give the "Followers" widget a try, so I've added it to the sidebar. Now you can prove to me that Keith isn't the only one who reads this blog. Ha!

Even Flash Conferences Hit By Recession!

Well, there can't be any doubt that the recession has hit the Flash conference industry: Flash On The Beach Miami has been canceled.

In John Davey's words
It is with huge regret that I have taken the decision to cancel FOTB Miami. My intention was to take FOTB with its awesome speaker line up, fantastic networking opportunities and of course terrific FOTB vibe to the USA, but low registration numbers have meant that I would not be able to deliver the high calibre event that Flash on the Beach has become well known for.
Such a shame. I was really looking forward to experiencing FOTB in a new setting. I guess I'll have to get my FOTB fix in Brighton.

With last years' cancellation of Flash On Tap, I really hope this isn't a growing trend.

I'm Speaking at Flash On The Beach Miami!

Woohoo! I've been asked to speak at FOTB Miami!

I've been to two, in Brighton, and they're quite possibly the best Flash conference I've been to as either a speaker or attendee. I'm looking forward to seeing what John does with Miami as a venue.

Well, now I have to decide on what to speak about.

Available for contract work!

Well, I'm returning to my life as an independent contractor. I'm taking a little time to work on some personal projects and then I'll be looking for contract work again. I might even get back to Mathematica. It will be good to be in charge of my own time again.
