Google's new "Interest Based" AdSense

So, I'm not sure what I think of Google's upcoming "interest based" advertising through AdSense. On the surface it seems like it crosses the line in terms of personal privacy while reading blogs. Essentially, they will track users even when the user has left your site.

I haven't made a decision yet, but I'm strongly leaning toward dropping Google AdSense when it goes into effect.

Here's an excerpt of an email from Google, about the program:

We're writing to let you know about the upcoming launch of interest-based advertising, which will require you to review and make any necessary changes to your site's privacy policies. You'll also see some new options on your Account Settings page.

Interest-based advertising will allow advertisers to show ads based on a user's previous interactions with them, such as visits to advertiser website and also to reach users based on their interests (e.g. "sports enthusiast"). To develop interest categories, we will recognize the types of web pages users visit throughout the Google content network. As an example, if they visit a number of sports pages, we will add them to the "sports enthusiast" interest category. To learn more about your associated account settings, please visit the AdSense Help Center at http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/topic.py?topic=20310.

That advisory on "you must revise your privacy policies" took me by surprise too.

Another angle that concerns me is that, while Google offers you an opt-out cookie, this doesn't necessarily do anything about cookie-less IP/userAgent/surfPattern tracking... all those advertisements are "web beacons", pinging Google when you visit a new page. Google still doesn't let you examine what data they store on you, much less opt out of that process. Tracking-by-cookie is a start, but not the totality.

So what is a site's privacy policy supposed to say? Maybe: "Sorry, you don't have any privacy any more. Get used to it."

well, we can't make any judgments now about this new change

but anyway I'm not very optimistic about it
