In Brighton for FOTB--first day

After a long flight from San Francisco, I made my way from London Heathrow airport to the conference hotel in Brighton. Luckily, my flight was not affected by the traffic control issues that caused havoc with many of yesterday's flights into London. I'm really glad I arranged for an early check-in, because I fell asleep almost as soon as I'd settled into my room.

I woke up very early this morning, and watched some of the local news. It's very interesting to see a non-US-news perspective on US events. Eventually, I headed downstairs for some breakfast and much needed coffee.

It's a really gorgeous day, so I walked around a bit...taking care to not get lost. In the pavilion gardens, I came across these wonderful green elephants.

Brighton or Bust!

Next week, I fly to the UK for the fabulous Flash On The Beach conference. I can hardly wait!

While I do have some biz meetings scheduled during my stay, I've got a lot of unscheduled time during the conference itself. Which is great! If you're going to be at the conference, be sure to say hi!

Before FOTB, Edwin Heijmen and I are meeting up to work out some plans for developing a framework and libraries for working with MathML in AS3.

Right after FOTB, I'm spending a few days in London...mostly at the British Museum. What can I say? I love the museums in London!

On the way home, I was going to stop in Boston for FOT, but it's been rescheduled. Honestly, I'm really very happy about the rescheduling. It would have made for a long time on the road, if it had gone on as originally planned.

HP needs help with it's Help Desk

I'd like to start out by saying that when I finally got through to the right person at tech support, they did a really great job.

Unfortunately, getting to that person was an exercise in frustration and was a terrible user experience. First off, a computer required me to go through a lengthy interview. Actually, I had to go through that interview several times, over the course of my quest for tech support.

The first "live" person I spoke with, immediately demanded the same information that I had just given the computer. Why put me through an "interview" with a computerized voice, and ask me for details like product numbers, if this information is not available to the poor soul who has to try and solve the problem I'm calling about.

Aggravating customers is just plain bad business. It's bad for the customers, who may decide to avoid doing business with you in the future. It's bad for your employees, who have to interact with frustrated customers.

Update: Once I got through to the right person, the support was stellar. In fact, they've called me today to follow up and make sure that the issue is resolved. They suggested that they call back again tomorrow, just in case I need anything. I'm a happy camper. I wish that HP would better support their people and make sure customers get through without the hassle and headache I went through.

Moving forward on MathML in AS3

A few years ago, I played around with parsing MathML with ActionScript. I've always wanted to get back to the project, but something always comes up. Well, I'm returning to this pet project again, along with Edwin Heijmen. Our goal is to create an open source framework, and a core library for working with MathML in AS3.

If we can work out our schedules, Edwin and I are going to meet up in Brighton at the end of September. I'm heading over to the UK for Flash On the Beach. I'll arrive in Brighton a few days before the conference, and stay for a few days after. There's also a chance that I'll stop off in Boston for Flash on Tap, on my way back.

Interested in the project? Are you currently working with MathML? We'd love to hear from you.

Update: I will indeed stop off in Boston, to attend Flash on Tap.
Another Update: FOT has been rescheduled, so I won't be stopping in Boston :-)
